The Hidden Phase of Healing No One Talks About: The Identity Gap

The Identity Gap: Who You Were vs. Who You’re Becoming

There’s a phase in rebuilding your life that no one really prepares you for.

It’s not the breaking point.

It’s not even the healing.

It’s the in-between—the space where who you used to be no longer fits… but who you’re becoming isn’t fully clear yet.

This is what I call the Identity Gap.

And if you’re feeling lost, uncertain, or disconnected right now, you’re likely standing right in it.

After a major life shift—like divorce, leaving a long-term relationship, or walking away from something that once defined you—your identity doesn’t just bounce back. It dissolves. The roles you once held—partner, spouse, caretaker, even “the strong one”—begin to fall away.

And what’s left can feel unfamiliar.

Unsteady.

Even a little scary.

But here’s the truth most people miss: feeling lost isn’t failure—it’s evidence of growth.

You are no longer the version of yourself that lived in survival mode or stayed in what no longer aligned. But you also haven’t fully stepped into your next version yet.

That space? It’s not empty.

It’s becoming.

Instead of rushing to “figure it all out,” try this:

Start asking better questions.

Not “Who am I now?”

But “What feels true to me today?”

Pay attention to what you’re drawn to.

What gives you energy.

What no longer feels acceptable.

This is how identity is rebuilt—not in one big moment, but in small, intentional shifts.

You don’t need to have it all mapped out.

You just need to stay open long enough to meet the version of you that’s emerging.

Because you’re not lost.

You’re in transition.

And that’s where real transformation begins.

Until next time,

Coach Deborah
